Video Summary:

Finding Mike Green at Chicopee is like playing a game of hot-potato. Mike can be seen bouncing all over the hill ensuring the park is maintained and everyone is safe. Well instead of tossing Mike to the next person, I held on for as long as I could. I managed to squeeze a few minutes out of him to finally squash some park rumours and also reveal future development plans.

Chicopee shook things up this year, and it was for the better. Mike Green has become the new Risk Management Coordinator where, amongst other ‘fun safety duties’, he is in charge of park development. One of the first things he did after stepping into the new role was hire Jeremy Shield, Certified Park Designer. Why it took so long for someone to finally step in and make a decision like this is beyond me, but it happened, and only good things have come from it.

I asked Mike a number of questions to finally reveal the truth about the Chicopee park. Here’s the truth behind the nagging rumours:

1. Q: Is the park moving its location to another run or another part of the hill?
A: No. This is an open discussion that’s on the table, but nothing will happen in the near future.

2. Q: Is there going to be a beginner’s park?
A: Yes. The beginner’s park will be installed and opened within a week. It will be located on Rabbit’s Foot.

3. Q: Is the park going to change features every month?
A: Yes. Each month the features will be rotated and swapped to keep the park fresh. The ‘C box’ is a feature that will soon be swapped in.

4. Q: Is there going to be any new features built and added this year?
A: Yes. A wall ride is being priced out. If the price is approved, it will be installed by mid-February. It would be located at the bottom of the jump line.

5. Q: What’s the deal with the Ride-On rails and will there ever be Gap-On rails?
A: Yes. Once the beginner’s park is installed, the main park will transition into a more advanced park. This will include handrail angled rails and gap-ons. This will happen as early as mid-February.

I hope this finally puts to rest the Chicopee park rumours that have been circulating for the past number of years. I for one would like to applaud Mike Green and Chicopee for the pro-active stance they’ve taken towards park development this season. What Mike has accomplished thus far is a giant leap in the right direction. Being a park rider, I’m excited to see the changes and upgrades over the next few years.

Meltdown Snowboard Shop’s goal is to push, promote and grow the sport of snowboarding within the Kitchener-Waterloo region. Meltdown will actively pursue the opportunities in park development and progression with Chicopee.

I would like to thank Chicopee and Mike Green for the exclusive interview.
